Ignition Replacement
Has anyone ever done this and have any advise to offer?

You have to take apart the column down to the blinker switch but don't take it out. In the upper right side if you use a strong flashlight you can see a discoloration in the plastic that is where it was made thin so you can punch thru it with a Phillips screwdriver to gain access to the ignition release button and then it pulls out very easy. If you have to, take it to a locksmith place and have them do it for you. A good locksmith has done this many times before. They are also the same steering column as a Cadillac.
good luck

It sounds as if you want to replace the lock cylinder. All Corvette lock cylinders were the same from 1969 through early 1979 regardless of the steering column type (standard non-adjustable or Tilt&Telecoping).
Replacing the lock cylinder is fairly straight forward. There are two papers that are posted at Terry Rudy's Corvettefaq websight that can take you step by step through replacing the lock cylinder. Here are the links for either type column.
