Default Side Mirror install

So how hard is it to install the stock chrome side mirrors? I removed the door panel, put the window down, glass is in the way. Put the window up, stll can't get to the mirror nuts. So what other option do I have? What am I doing wrong? This should be pretty easy right?

You can use expanding rubber plugs (with nuts inside) Usually comes in the mounting kit. As you tighten the screws the rubber expands (like a hollow wall anchor does). Drill the proper size holes in the correct location, and push the plugs in. Do you have a template for the proper drilling location?

I used the plugs too! They worked great, a lot better than the epoxy that Bubba installed them with the first time!

If you buy an aftermarket mirror new for the passengers side it will come with everything you need to install the mirror. It will have the template and the well nuts that you will need. I have a few pics of my mirror install. Check em out.

You did a good job Eddie 70 in answering this question. It only takes about 10 minutes maximum to do the whole job.

Eddie70: That's got to be scary drilling those holes into new paint. I just recently bought a new mirror installation kit with new well nuts, gasket, set screw, etc. Mirror is nice and tight now. Very easy. Don't need to go thru the door at all.

Will standard wellnuts work? I have a GM pass. side mirror that I want to install, but it doesn't have the wellnuts...

Chris,
The only thing about using the well nuts from the hardware store is the the flange on them is a little thicker. If you could shave the flange down on them a little with a belt sander or something, they should be no problem. I tried some from the hardware store that I had laying around (somehow I misplaced the wellnuts that came with the mirror, later found) and for whatever reason the mirror did not set flush on the body. It may have been on the gasket or the bottom of the mirror base plate, I can't remember where the interference was.

What about customer mirror applications? Anyone taken that on yet?

I would like to put sport like mirrors on my 77 eventually. Any suggestions?

I have a mounting template, however I was also wondering about the driver side mirror. It seems I didn't get a mounting kit with that mirror. The plastic "chrome" mirrors that are on the car were there when I bought it. I recently bought a real chrome set to replace the current ones. I hope the holes line up. Thanks everyone for your help.
