I have a 69 350/350 coupe with matching numbers. I am beginning a full restoration project and need some advise before proceeding. The windshield frame is shot on the car and will need replaced. The damage is so bad that the vin tag has rusted to the point that the lower rivet no longer holds the tag. How do I replace the windshield frame and remount the vin tag? Is there a source to get replacement vin tags and rivets? I am also considering a replacement birdcage, how can I do any of this without affecting the integrity of the numbers?
Unless you are a gifted and talented welder, let a reputable vette restorer do this. They do them every day, and can work miracles. Same with the VIN. I would not touch it. Let them remove it, and rivet a new one on. Any Vette restorer that has done NCRS restos before knows exaclty what to do. Just do your homework, here, references, books, car shows, talk to as many people as you can. my .02

Thanks all,

Depending on the state, only the DMV (or a licensed body shop with DMV authorization) can legally do ANYTHING (remove, replace, etc.) to that vin tag. It should have special pop "type" steel rivets with a serrated (star like) top supposedly "unavailable to the general public". That said, I have seen them for sale....
I believe the vin tag rivits are refered to as "rosset" due to there shape. they do not have round heads bur 6 sided heads. They are out there.
I wouldn't fear changing out an upper windshield frame (pillar post and up) as long as there is good metal to weld to. Take lots of measurments and get it perfect. I made a jig when I did mine.

Jeff I believe the advice you've received here is right on and would only suggest you post your query at the NCRS Tech forum as well. There has been discussion of this in the past and if you search the archives...should come up with some background study materials.
Thanks for the help, I have contacted the BMV here in Ohio, they have referred me to one of the State Highway Patrol Inspection stations. I will post my findings and start watching for the rivets. By the way, I got the front end off the car and found that the damage is much more extensive so Im planning on replacing the birdcage. Anyone out there got a solid birdcage they want to get rid of?
