I just bought a 79 L48 and the last owner said it sat for a while. It runs fine, but I have been reading on here about getting a tune up and the order in which to do mods.
I changed the plugs and that helped. The carb could use a cleaning I'm sure but I think I should go ahead and have it rebuilt. When taken in for a "Tune up" what all is involved?
It depends where you go... Anybody can offer a tune up for a certain price, but how many of these shops have actually tuned a 70's vette (or any other vintage car for that matter) in the last few years. If you find a shop that will do it properly, it will cost you.
Changing the wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter and mechanical advance are all easy enough to do in your driveway. Rebuilding the carb is not rocket science, and it gives you a good feel for how to tune it yourself.
Lars has written some great articles on tuning at corvettefaq.com.
Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, check timing, fuel filter, oil change is pretty much a standard tune up. If you want to get more aggressive then add a modified advance curve, carb rebuild, trans service and new EGR valve. If the old EGR valve is stuck shut it doesn't hurt anything until your car needs to pass smog but if it's stuck open it will hurt idle and off idle performance.
