I'm thinking of rebuilding my distributor I'm looking at kits from Pertronix and Proform they both seem to offer the same stuff any one have exp. with either one
I have been running Pertronix series 1 in both my 68 Bonneville and my Vette for many years. The Bonny was my daily driver up until recently. Both are still performing great. they will not give you a performance advantage over a set of well tuned points but they will give the same level of performance continuously once it is tuned.
Make sure you set the mechanical advance for a total of 36 deg and all in by 2500-3000 rpm. Then check the vacuum advance gives another 16 (?, Check Lars paper in Corvettefaq) degrees for cruising.
I put the Pertronix HEI hop-up kit in my '80 distributor. The Pertronix coil was defective and would run erraticaly. I put the stock coil back in and it runs great. Aside from that problem, the recurve kit that comes with the package was one of the best I have used. The adjustable vacuum can that comes with the kit is pretty cool as well.
If I had it to do over again I would have kept the GM electronics, installed the recurve kit, the adjustable vacuum advance and the new cap and called it good.
