There is not enough space behind the speaker to get much bass, not even enough to optimize 5 1/4. While I prefer round, bought some 4X6 to experiment w/ several years ago. Put in the kicks angled & it worked fine though little bass as expected. Removed them. Tried them in the SS doors- worked well for 4X6. Removed them.

That's a good way.
4s or 5s rec.
When there is a stereo in, I run a tweaked home speakers. One large amp. in the center compartment for the tweaked removable rear speakers w/ 2 long throw 4s (equil. to 2 8s) & a dome in each.
It ROCKS !
Rarely use it. The engine makes enough music for me.
I use 4" round MTX speakers. Crutchfield sells round or rectangular foam baffles that fit behind the speakers. I installed these behind the speakers and made an airtight enslosure which enhances the little bit of base response I can get from such a small speaker. Installing the foam baffles does enhance overall sound quality too.
For better base, I purchased a Bazooka Tube from U-bid for $80.00. It has a 8" woofer and amp built right in the tube. Mounted it in the very back, so you don't really even see it. Sounds great and requires not mods.
