Two other "rare" '73 facts. Only 45 1973 Z07 Big Brake & Suspension cars were ever built. Also, "supposedly" 22-28 '73 Corvettes were painted "Black", a non-stock color for '73. Then there is the 4,000 "missing" VIN numbers between 28,000 & 32,000
First year for Radial Tires & ALL 1973 Corvettes were "ORIGINALLY" equipped with a smog pump from St. Louis
Interesting you mention this. A friend of mine has a 73 L48 Vert with a trim tag that has "SPEC" for the paint color. The car was ordered by the owner of a Chevrolet dealer for his wife's driver. She liked yellow cars, but didn't like the 73 yellow. They had the car delivered to the dealer in gray primer, all emblems on just as if it had been painted a stock color. The dealership painted the car a lighter yellow, very much like the 68 Safari yellow. Nicely equipped car, TH400 with black leather, PS, PB, PW, Tilt, stereo, A/C and a black vinyl hardtop. I think it is sitting right around 60-70K miles right now.

I have heard of this before. I was looking at a black 1973 a few years ago that had the "SPEC" designation...black was not color offered in 1973. Since then I have read that if you were to have a car judged at a NCRS event with the "SPEC" for the color code..it would have to be in primer to be correct. I'm not sure if that is true.

There is a guy here in charlotte that has one of those cars. The first owner wanted a black car and so he ordered the car in primer. Very intresting I thought. The one you mention about the person that wanted the car in yellow is the only other one I have heard of.

It is true. Other similar codes were, SPC or SPL, also for "spec" & "special". Since being in the Corvette hobby, I myself have probably viewed about 10 "Spec" tag cars, none shown in primer except one 1966 bigblock roadster in the Bloomington Special Collection many years ago.
I helped the owner go through the car after he bought it and I tried to get him to take it to the NCRS winter meet in primer with the emblems on. We had the car apart and stripped for paint. Just couldn't convince him to do it. We would have had to strip the door jambs etc and put the entire car back together to show it. We had paint mixed that matched what the original owner had painted it and reshot it.

you have the L82 - which was a good thing. Zora himself was very pleased with the L82. Rumor surfaced that he thought the small block L82 was better in the Vette,... in the aspect of an "all around" sports car.
Granted the 454 was faster in the straight line, but the extra weight made it slightly unbalanced. Not the best for rally type driving.
But having a choice... is what makes it great
