It doesn't do it every time, but it does do it most of the time. It just grinds slightly, as if the clutch wasn't fully engaged. I adjusted the clutch (a couple of times), but it didn't go away. A friend mentioned it might be the synchro's going out.
Any ideas?
btw, it's a t-5. I plan on replacing it in the next 2 years, but I would like to drive it until that time.
Reverse has no syncro but first does. Are you sure your clutch is releasing fully? Sometimes the clutch disc will bind on the input shaft and not be fully pushed away from the flywheel.
Maybe you could check clutch dis-engagement by selecting second gear instead of first as a test.
I'll give that a shot tonite. I had noticed that it doesn't do it in any other gear, but only when shifting from 1 to 2 or 3 to 4 etc. I hadn't tried starting out in second.
grinding when going into gears is a sign of a worn or oil soaked disc. Bad synchros won't hold the gears, thus gear popping...I've never had synchros that bad that the gears were grinding when shifting...
The official GM test to determine if the clutch is bad or the tranny (straight from the '73 service manual) is to place the trans in neutral, let out the clutch, then depress the clutch, wait 10 seconds and try to put it in reverse. If it grinds, the clutch is bad. If it does not, and you have grinding problems while driving, the trans is bad.

his thread title was "grinding noise going into first/reverse"
later he said "I had noticed that it doesn't do it in any other gear, but only when shifting from 1 to 2 or 3 to 4 etc."
I thought he was saying it didn't grind any gears unless he was shifting into reverse or first while stopped. Maybe I misunderstood him. I was thinking he could try selecting second gear while stopped and see if he felt any resistance or heard any grinding then.
