I have rust in front of the rear tires where the trailing arm mounts (I imagine a common occurrence), and I seem to remember there may have bee some company out there producing parts to repair this part of the frame (where the rail meets the cross-member meets the rear arch which goes over the rear drive shaft). Does anyone recall if such a kit exists, and if they have repaired asection of frame like this, if it is worth it, etc? Thanks!
I did not use them, but made my own pieces as needed.
By rust, do you mean rot (holes) ?
I would seek the advice of whom-ever will be doing the
cutting and welding. They may prefer to make their own
pieces. Also, the rot may extend past the area that the repair
sections cover.
IMO - to do this right, the body must be lifted. Maybe get away
with lifted up several inches on one side, but you really need
to see under the body just to assess the situation. It always
looks better with the body in place.
I agree w/ NH Vette, body needs to come off to do it right. Depends on how much rust there is to what kind of work needs to be done, can you post pics? Quanta reproduced frame pieces alond w/ some others. Go to the NCRS website for others.
The only way to accurately evaluate the extent of the rust damage is with the body off .... all the way off. Once the body is off the mounts ... 6 inches or 6 feet is the same amount of work. Regardless, if you need to replace entire frame sections, the body will have to come off in order to do it right.
I replaced both frame rail sections using the replacements from Zip. If the rails are really bad, the rocker channels (the part that sits on the body mounts) in the body are probably even worse. I'm now in the process of replacing those.
