Are you taking it out of car or leaving it in to clean it? If you take it out, make sure to plug all holes like speedo cable and such. If not you will wind up with water in it.
Hi: U can pretty much power wash the whole trans casing (housing) without any worries, but try not to overdue spraying directly into the front pump area, as well as the tail. As for painting it. They were never really painted because the casing is aluminum. But,
I painted mine bright chevy orange & even though U can't see it all when it's in the car, it still looks nice.

Just got through with mine two days ago. Used purple power and a small brush to get it clean. Then hit it with a brass wire wheel on my die grinder. It looks almost chrome now, amazing what 35,000 rpm can do.
Mine's sitting in the basement for detailing at the moment. I'm going the Rub-N-Buff route after the simple green does it's work. Should look bright and shiny untill I drive in the rain once.
Sounds like a manual transmission. You really don't want to use any degreaser on the whole tranny. The shifter shafts have rubber seals that will start leaking. As mentioned before you need to plug the speedometer hole. There's also the hole in the tail where the driveline spline fits in...it's a big gaping hole and is hard to plug up tight except with the spline shaft installed. Also, you need to be carefull while you are moving it around cause the gear oil will all spill out...good time to drain it and replace with fresh anyway.
Really, the best way to clean the tranny is with a scrub brush and mild detergent like liquid laundry soap, but if you are carefull a rag and degreaser will work good, as long as you stay away from the seals with it. Follow up with Mothers aluminum polish for the final touch.
