Default colour change queries -your thoughts

Hi forum dudes,

Ive been looking for a c3vette for a while now and Ive been close to finding a few that seem pretty cool (match my criteria and stuff).

When I persue these cars further 1 thing detracts me from continuing any further - I find out that the car is not the original paint colour.

It seems to be a common thing, the changing of the paint colour.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on purchasing a car that is not the original colour....does it affect your decision? or am I being silly?

Is it more difficult to sell a car without the original colour? Should the car be less in price cause its not in the original colour?

Are there things to look out for when getting a car thats not the original colour? (Like discolouration in hidden places or something?)

Sorry for the long winded post, I was just hoping people would share their thoughts on this matter as Im getting frustrated finding great cars then finding out they are not the original colour...am I just being stupid?

Stay cool,
cosmicvette

I say as long as you LIKE the color, then it shouldn't matter...unless you are buying for an investment. Repainting a C3 is an expensive project, so get it right the first time.

If you like it and the paint is in nice shape don't worry about it. A good paint job is one of the most expense things to do on a Vette. Mine is not the original color and it was the main reason I bought it, cause the paint was in really nice shape. Good luck!

Again, . My car was originally silver when I bought it from the first owner and I had it painted black back in '98. I've since been offered more money than I paid for it but I didn't want to sell it. I think it depends on the buyer and what makes them happy.

Default Maybe stick with factory colors offered that year?

I say do what you like but if you are worried about resale maybe factory colors for the year in question would help... But again, if the paint is good and you like the color, go for it!

Original paint is one thing, original color on a painted car is another. In my opinion if the car has been painted, doesn't matter if the color is original or not, it's still been painted. A collector would probably favor a car with excellent original paint over an identical car that has been painted the original color.

If your intent is to have the car judged it will matter.

If your next buyer plans to have the car judged, it will matter.

If not, do what pleases you.

I agree with this too. When I was looking for my car I wanted one the correct color. I know I am not going to own this car forever and I felt it would be easier to sell if it was the correct color. I passed on a few repaints while looking for mine.

I would not buy a Vette that had been painted a different color, but that's just me. I was never a fan of changing a Vette's color, be it interior or exterior.

Thanks guys,
I appreciate all your replies.

You've definetely got me thinking deeper about this issue now....

Its a tough one....my boyfriend just said he wants one the right original colour, but I think differently now, Id be content with a car with an awesome paint job whether its the original or not....
or id like a car with its original paint that doesn't look 100% but is just nice and untouched........

well there I go again!

Back to square 1!

Ill keep thinking about it while I search for the right car.

Stay cool,
cosmicvette

unless it's some wild color shifting deal or something. If you like it, and it's done well I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd say that as long as you like the colour & that it's in good condition then go for it. Some Vettes were painted pretty disgusting colours judging by the parts of mine that can still be seen. It was Maroon metallic. I've not seen any pictures of what it should look like, but looking at the parts not painted over during the respray (something else to look out for if the colour has been changed), the colour is so putrid that I probably wouldn't have bought it!
It's not like these things are rare pieces of history, there were lots made so a colour change isn't in the same league as painting, say, a Ferrari Dino in cyan!
If I were looking for a C3 again I'd have no problem in paying more for one that had been reprayed black from its original colour than for an original black one with paintwork needing attention. But I'm the guy who wanted a black C3 & bought a white one, so what do I know!

I would rather have a repainted vette than have a weird factory color or a over 30 feets looking good paint .
