Hey guys, I have a 76 L-48 with the factory alarm. Why when I activate the alarm does it automatically start to sound. I don't know where to start checking (sensors or whatever) to figure out how to fix it. It's not a big deal since I am not in a high crime area, but it is there and everything else works correctly - so I would like to try and fix.
Any help you experts can offer would be greatly appreciated!
I had the same problem with my 76. There are four switches that you will need to check. One in each door jam located under the rear quarter panel, one for the hood and one behind the key switch in the left front fender. If you don't have an ohm meter just disconnect each switch one at a time to see if that is were the problem is. I found the switch behind the key had broken off its mount on mine. If the switches look ok the check alarm relay located in your storage compartment. I will have 4 wires going to it. There will be 2 black wires (one is 18ga and one is 20 ga), one pink and one white. The 20 ga black runs to your switches. Check this wire to see if it is grounded out. If it is, you will need to trace that wire and look for the short. If that checks ok then you will need to check the relay with an ohm meter. I don't have a schematic in front of me so I am not sure what terminal to check on the relay.
Sorry, wrong color, check the white wire going back to the relay. It will be the 3 blade connector located in your jack well of the storage compartment

Get the schematic for this out of the Chevy electrical manual. Besides the switches there is a flasher and a relay. It is very easy to follow the circuit if you have the schematic. I have a '78 and what was wrong with mine was that the $2 flasher was defective. Mine was a little differnet problem in that I was getting 8v to the alarm horn, which I thought might be normal...wrong. It needs a full 12v to activate. The falsher was loading the voltage down."?<mK
