Default 2 brake questions

I have 2 questions, the first is I just removed my front rotors on my 76 and when I was cleaning out the wheel bearing grease I noticed that the inside raceway was spinning when I was wiping it. It doesn't look discolored or deformed. Can I put in a new raceway and bearing or is it bad? Second, if it is bad, do you drill the rivits the same way as the back rotors and install without rivits? Thanks for the help....

After you remove the spinning race (cup) and there are no signs that the bore it presses into is not damaged you can install a new bearing. That is fairly UNLIKELY since the bearing is harder than the housing so, it the bearing race (cup) spun, odds are that the housing is toast.

The answer to your second question is yes.

i would try the new race to see if its a press fit. Maybe someone used the wrong size bearing. If you can't get it to press in you probably need a new hub.

i don't think anyone here puts them damn narly rivits back in. I don't.

Hey 76Project, I don't have enough experience to answer your first question regarding the spinning races, but I did just get into a front suspension job completing the tear down today and can definitely say that you'll need to drill out the rivets on the front rotors to free them from the hub. Good luck from a fellow MNsotan.

A couple of options to replacing the hub is having a machine shop install a sleeve that is sizeed for correct fit, or in some cases the hub can be knurled or peened to hold the race. The outer race can't turn. It has to be stationary. If it is just a tad loose, you can peen the hub with a punch at 90* spots which may be sufficient to hold it. If in doubt, take the hub and a new outer race to a machine shop and let them fix it.
