Question first – How do I remove the sport mirror from the door of a 77?
Background: Inherited a 77 from my dad three years ago and have been restoring it for the past few months. The interior is almost done and looking pretty good and I fixed all of the wiring and vacuum problems fairly easily (but not cheaply).
While waiting on my door panels to arrive, I decided to attack the sport mirrors. Drivers side has always been wobbly at the mirror - the base is very secure. The passenger side was never installed and I didn't inherit the installation instructions so I figured I would look at the drivers side and figure out how to do the passenger side.
When I started looking at the wobble in the drivers side, I discovered that dad had a little Bubba in him. A rubbery material was stuffed behind the glass to keep it from wobbling. When I removed the material, the mirror fell out - didn't break though.
Now, I've got the mirror in my hand and 3 little broken cables sticking out of the housing. I'm assuming the cables are for the remote that was evidently cut off.
Looking at the yet installed passenger mirror, I can see that there are two bolts in the base that hold the top on. There are also two bolts going from the base through the body. When I went to remove the Drivers side from the car I realized that I can’t get to one of the bolts because the window is in the way.

That's the problem... you need to remove the window (Or at least off the track) to move the window to the side to get to the bolts, an extension will fit through the holes in the upper door, after mirror is out, there are two more torx screws inside of hte base, this will separate the two. I am assuming that if the cable is loose off the glass, you will probably need a new mirror assembly. make sure to use the plastic gasket between the door and mirror base in the correct position or the mirror won't be lined up correctly. I just replaced the ones on my '78, not that hard to do since your panels are already off.
Hi: I recall that when I had my '72, I installed some of those sport mirrors on it & I had to remove the passenger window in order to gain proper access to put the mirror in. It's really no big deal to remove & replace the window. Just take your time.
Thanx for the quick responses. I was assuming the window had to come out but didn't really want to face reality. Oh well, can't be as hard as the dash...(please don't answer that).
Not to hijack or anything, but I have a related question. If you don't have a passenger side mirror currently, what is the best way to locate where to drill the holes for the bolts? I've got a pair of gaskets and pass. side mirror on the way, and I will need to get some sort of template or something. Anybody got one?

Reason: bored.
I did some body work and reinstalled the passenger side sport mirror on my '74 without removing the door glass. I dropped the glass all the way down and used an extention to hit the mounting nuts on the mirror.
since we are on sport mirrors, i need that mounting bracket that is inside the casing that holds the morror...non cable... it has the 2 screws that hold it from inside the leg of the mounting bracket...i also need a mirror for it...driver side....
Just did my '78 sport mirrors and the glass was Not moved and No holes cut. You have to get a 7/16" swivel wrench (it has the socket on one end that swivels). Remove both anti-rattlers and tape the glass on top on both sides. One nut is no problem. On the other one, use the swivel socket at about a 45* angle, it's a tight fit but it worked for me. This is the type of wrench you need... http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....e=snapon-store
