ok, I'm pretty certain the clutch is going, and I have some other under car stuff to do, so I am going to pull the trans and try to replace this myself.
The problem is, all of my other cars have been automatics, and I have never replaced a clutch before.
So, once I have the trans/ clutch out, how can I tell if I need to replace the clutch assembly, or just the clutch disc. If I can get away with just replacing the clutch disc, that would be great as I plan on replacing the trans in a couple of years and I will put a whole new clutch in at that time. Also, how can I tell if the pilot bearing/bushing need to be replaced? Are they usually replaced everytime the clutch is removed?
fwiw, it is a T5 trans.
If all that is happening is the clutch slipping you can probably get away with just the disk. When you have the clutch out check the flywheel and pressure plate for heat marks. If they are minimal you should be OK but if you have a lot of them on both surfaces the clutch and flywheel have probably been overheated. If you have doubts take the assembly to a mechanic and ask them if they would replace it or leave it alone. Unless the release bearing is making noise you probably won't have to replace it nor the pilot bearing. When manual trannys and their components are worn you usually get a lot of noise and vibration. As I said, if the clutch is just slipping you can probably get away with just the disk.
