Default Window Felt Replacement

What's the process to remove existing window felts and install replacements?

I have new window felts (inner & outer) from Corvette Central.

On the 70' Door Panel, I cannot figure out how to remove the clips/staples that attach the original felt. They're unbelievably difficult to pry loose!

Added to this, even if I'm successful in removing the existing felt, how do I attach the new replacement? I've never seen a staple as beefy as those that are holding the existing felts and I really don't want to resort to "Bubbaization" i.e. glue or screws.

Your input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Default Someone Must Have The Answer

Come on gentlemen. I know I can't be the only fool who wants to replace the window felts (or am I?).

Nope, you are not the only one. I have had a pair of those felt whiskers for my door panels for about 3 years now and have not put them on for the same reasons you stated above.

Default How to install new "Eyebrows" in your door

James,

Some of us have to work to pay for our hobbies!

I assume you are talking about the OUTER FELT SEALS aka "Eyebrows"

This process is a lot easier with the window out of the way but I think it can be done if the window is wound all the way down and its rails loosened. You will also need to remove the screw which holds on the door seal at the front of the felt/chrome on the door. That screw goes through the rubber, felt and chrome.

Heres the scoop. The felt is held on by TWO different mechanical devices. First the black press in clips which you can see on the new felts. Secondly there are two screws one near the front and one near the rear that fasten the felt to the door along with the press in clips.

Here is the bad news. The repro felts do not have perfect alignmnent with the old holes. Only way to verify the holes is to match up the old "eyebrow" with the new one before you put it on.

I had to use a dremel to re-drill on set of holes for the clips and drill out another hole for the screws. It is not difficult just time consuming.

If you have a copy of the AIM for your car it shows a good picture.

Good Luck,

Pete

Pete:

I'm at work too but admit you did catch me screwing-off!

Now about the felts:

Thanks for the information regaring the "eyebrows". I was actually inquiring about the inside door panel felt but your info. regarding the outside "eyebrows" is appreciated.

This seems like a bitch of a job even after reviewing the AIM (funny, this acronym reminds me of my long-lost aviation career, i.e. Airmans Information Manual)!

I'll take another look at this over the weekend. This may be a job I off-load to the paint/body shop. A man's got to know his limitations!

Thanks again for your input.

My I ask if you had any problems with the repro felts? I heard that the new felts not only don't line up well, but they are also too stiff and this stops the window from going up..has this happened on yours, and if not...can you tell me where you got your felts from...thanks
