Default 69 Seats, Lock down mechanism & Alignment Help?

Just got my 69 Corvette Convertible Comfort-Weave Vinyl seats back today via UPS from recovering from Wilcox! They shipped them unassembled, so I had to cut holes in bottom seat sides for the (2) threaded bolts which assemble the top to the bottom. I used a hot solder iron to make the holes, allowing easier and cleaner access to the threads when inserting the bolts.

My question is... The seat top part doesn't seem to be perfectly aligning to the bottom. The plastic stopper hits that "chrome" bottom adjustable stop but it is not perfect center (which is ok) and the locking mechanism is very difficult to lock in, so that when you sit the seat back upwards, it will not lock down. I even have the optional shim kit and I'm playing with it for a good alignment and easy lock down. It seems to help some but It should be a no-brainer!

Can I have the Wrong seat back installed on one of the seat bottoms? Or are they all the same?

I don't want to slam on brakes one day and have the seat back move forward on me. Seems it should be easier to lock down by simply positioning the seat upwards and not having to "SLAM" it back so hard, even then it seems it's not aligned correctly. I should add, My seats were like this before I sent them off for recovering!

Anyone know what I'm talking about and can provide some help here?

Also, Is there a way to tell which seat is the driver's and which is the passenger's side seat when I reinstall them?

-Or- Does it NOT matter?

I'd like to "re-vitalize" your post since I'm about ready to re-do my '69 seats. I thought the seats were identical, aren't they? So either back should fit on either bottom. And my seat belts don't fit nicely between the center console and the driver's side, but they do on the passenger side, is that normal? The brackets for tying the back to the bottom seem bent/worn, are they all the same?

The seats are the same. No rights or lefts. You'll have to play with the shim kit. You can put the round shims under the stopper and the rectangular shims under the catch. That ought to put you in the ballpark. Be careful "messing" with the catch. You can easily break the plastic seat back in the catch area. Also, you can easily attach the catch "backwards". It goes on only one way. Try reversing it and see if that helps.

Sounds like you have the "early" 69 seats with the metal gizmo on the bottom. Later seats have a hard rubber gizmo on the seat bottom and a threaded rod/rubber stopper on the seat back. Chuck

You should call me or Norm tomorrow if you get a chance. By the rules I can't post the number here, but I'm sure you have it.

I'm sorry my shop did not assemble the seats before shipping them back to you. Shipping them not assembled makes for less chance of them being bent in shipment.

As far as the alignment is concerened, call the toll free number tomorrow...

Regards,

Ernie
