Probably the best iron heads out there right now are the GM Vortec heads. They are approximately $400 a pair but you need a new intake due to the bolt pattern and they are limited to about .470 left.
IMHO, buy old heads and getting them ported and polished to full potential is not cost effective. The new generation of aluminum heads are great value for money, flow great, are repairable, and let you run a little higher compression.
its cost effective when ur on a budget when i can get used iron for under $100 i have actually been looking at vortec heads thou i can get some with about 20,000 on them for under $200 mabye ill do that
Like someone else said, you'll be wasting your money on using old heads. Porting should be left to the professionals who know where to grind and have a way to check the flow. A do-it-youself port job may help but it will not net a great set of heads. There is also the possibilty that you may go to far and destroy the head. Having them professionally done will cost as much as a new set of heads and more than likey will not outflow a set of modern heads.
If you want to go the cheap route, buy a set of GM Vortec heads and the additional items to go along with them. Either shop around and buy the parts individually or buy a kit. These heads will get you about the most bang for your buck. If you want to blow money, then get a set of old heads ported. A year later you can then buy the Vortecs or Aluminum heads and toss the old ones in the dumpster.
There's a old saying that I heard over 20 years ago that is relative here. It goes something like this "You can't make chicken soup out of chicken crap'.
i wasn't planning on porting and polishing at home with a drill bit.... it will be profesionally done... one mans junk is another mans treasure got 450+ from junk in the past ill see what i can do
