The passanger side window will not go up in my 79. I pulled off the interior door panel and checked the power getting to the motor...it is getting juice.
How do I get the power motor out to replace it? The bolts holding it in are inside the door and there is no way I can get them out. Do I pull the whole assemble out the top of the door? If I dismantle the rivets how will I get new rivets in ... any help is appreciated...thanks.
Is the motor running? If so, - you can try pulling up on the glass with electric up button on. If you can pull it up - you most likely you have had a regulator gear failure. If you're lucky it just may be a drive gear failure (autozone sells thses for about 20.00). The motor does unbolt through access holes in the exposed door panel/frame. Take another look. You will get some scraped up hands sticking them in there to put a wrench on the back nuts. Most of the common catalogs (ecklers, mid america) sell replacement gears - not a fun job) or complete (but pricey regulator assemblies). If you take the regulator out - pay particular attention to how all the pieces come out.
Had the same problem with my '82 back in the fall...had power getting to the motor but nothing out of the motor...was able to unbolt the motor from the door but couldn't get the dang thing out no matter how I twisted or turned (or how much I drank!).
In desperation I tried a search in the archives and found a post on someone using a 12 volt battery charger to check the motor without removing it. I said what the heck and gave it a try. Jumped two wires to the motor from the charger and the thing started turning...I simply put the bolts back in and wrote it off as an electrical gremlin somewhere; it's been trouble free since. Give it a try, you may be surprised.
Easiest way to do it:
1) Remove glass 2) Remove regulator from door with motor attached
3) Reinstall is reverse.
Excellent advice! I'm not really sure if you can pull the motor while the regulator is in the door but, if you could, make sure the sector gear is locked before you take the motor out! If the counter spring is unloaded (by removing the motor) very bad things will happen.
Follow SteveG75 advice. Remove the regulator and put a bolt through the sector gear. Then remove the motor.
I was able to pull the motor on a 73 passenger door with all the hardware still inside. I used a 1/4" drive (7/16" socket I THINK) to pull the bolts holding the motor in.
Just so you understand that the motor case goes to ground and the two leads are both hot. One is for up and one is for down. Do you have power to both leads? Put your ground wire on a multimeter on the case, which has to be grounded when it is out of the car, and test the juice to both leads.
I have read that MAYBE passenger car window motors of the same year are identical to Corvettes. Don't know that for a fact though.
You can pull the motor without removing the track system..you need very flexible fingers to get back in there - it can be done. Putting the nuts back on the bolts after the new motor goes in was the hardest.
