I fired up my vette this morning and backed it out of the garage (to sweep out the area and do some other work) and when I went to shut it off I couldn't remove the key. Any suggestions? I've done everything I can think of short of taking a hammer to it!!! It seems a bit sticky to push in and out of the transition stage of going into lock or turning the switch on but it's never done anything like this before.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the switch all together so I can clean it up and see what the problem is? I don't have a manual to use. Any information I can get on this would be dearly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
There is a lever on the lower end of your steering column (down under the brake master cylinder.) When you shift into PARK with an automatic or into REVERSE with a manual transmission, a cable connected to the transmission should push the column lever to the full UP position. You may have to manually move the lever all the way UP in order to remove your ignition key. If the cable is frozen in place, you may need to remove the cotter pin and disengage the cable end from the lever. Then you can rotate it UP. (Some people have permanently wired there lever in the UP position.)
The following paper describes how the system works. You will have to trouble shoot where your problem lies.
You are most kind. Thank you dearly for that information. I knew it was something simple but for the life of me I couldn't see past my own nose due the frustration I was having. Virtually every other ignition out there has that pinhole you press into with the key inserted into the switch and wallla... out comes the switch. This bad boy simply didn't have diddly to work with in terms of my personal experience. Now I see the connections and can deal with it properly.
It took me 50 years to get into owning a vette and this one 30 minute bit of frustration to near cause me to take a hammer to it. HAHAHAH!!! But I know better...... I do love this car and would never harm it. I just didn't want to screw something up, if you know what I mean.
