What do you guys think? The car is local so I'm planning to check it out. The $$$ seems reasonable. Anyone have a link for the correct numbers for '71 LT-1's? Any specific questions I should ask?

Looks nice, but for that money it better be real nice. Hard to tell by the pictures, but a couple things are wrong. LT-1s didn't have coolant expansion tanks and the valve cover should have a rubber push in oil cap not a chrome twist cap. That is minor stuff but suggests a closer look for what else is wrong. Also, an incorrect color paint while nice will hurt the value.

Thanks for the reply; good points! I also noticed that its missing the smog pump as well.

I believe they meant to say "Mille Miglia Red", and not "Torch Red"; but that's another detail to check.

Thanks again!

Most cars are missing the smog pump. Not a big deal but it will effect the value. Here are some numbers.

Engine suffix: CGZ
Cylinder Heads: 3973487
Intake Manifold: 3959594
Carburetor: 3989021 LIST 4801

Also maybe stating the obvious but look for 6500 rpm tach, evidence of TI, absence of fuel return line, heavy duty half shafts. For that money the car should be complete and correct.

Warning flags are going up here! I don't like the fact that the car has an expansion tank! Look for a single fuel line and forged cap type half shaft side yokes. There should be deep groove pulleys and the 6500 RPM red line tach. I would also get someone who is knowledgeable about the body to inspect it and the frame for me as it looks good on the top side but there can be many problems lurking under the surface that can run into BIG $$$! to fix.

It also seems like the manifold sits rather high and the runners look like a high-rise...with no evidence of a solenoid...perhaps as you've indicated re smog pump...it's been striped of its emission equipment. Look under driver's side front fender...should have charcoal canister.

Radiator looks like an aluminum variety that goes with the expansion tank but as pointed out...wasn't built that way at the factory.

I have the 70-72 Judging guide at home. If you have specific questions about what is right and what is wrong, email me off line. It looks nice but there are some warning signs as others have stated. For that price the car ought to be very original, pass a good close up inspection and run very nicely. It should really knock your socks off. I would also jack the rear of the car up and lightly tap on the frame right below where the rear arch kicks up for the rear wheel wells.

Really.....didn't know that! I have a vague memory of replacing the rubber plug on the 70 LT-1 way back when, with the chrome twist thinking it was not correct My 72 LT-1 also has the twist

Automania does a lot of consignments. I don't know if they're going to be able to answer detailed questions 'cuz they don't own the car. Ask for documentation. The car has NCRS "plates" so ask to see any NCRS awards the car might have. Top Flight would be nice, because the price is certainly "top flight"...

All 70s had the chrome twist cap. All 71s and most 72s had rubber push in cap.

If the trim tag tells you it wasn't originally quick-sale red, and if the other details discussed tell you it's a clone versus a real LT-1, I would be thinking closer to $20k on price. What can be seen looks nice. The rear spring may be sagging a little. The headlight protectors weren't replaced after the repaint.

A high 20's C-3 ought to be about perfect.

Thanks guys for all the really constructive feedback!

I found most of the #'s on this site:

http://www.71corvette.com/

Does anyone know the duration of the '70-'72 LT-1 cam @ 0.050"? Comp Cams sez 254/254 in their "Muscle Car Cams" section; but that must be

Also, I understand that the only difference mechanically between a '70 and '71 LT-1 engine is the compression ratio (11:1 vs. 9.0:1); is this true?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the link; but that site says the LT-1 cam is 242/254 @ 0.050"; which again sounds waay too large for a factory cam. What gives??

Did the LT-1 have a smog pump? I don't recall that. Is it a Calif car?

I agree that doesn't look like the original manifold.

All the pics I've seen of stock LT-1 engine bays have smog pumps; so I don't think it was a CA-specific requirement. Anyone know for sure?

Just looked at my 72 Assy manual and that year had one. I've never seen one up here with it though. But that doesn't mean that it didn't. My sb didn't have it std. Most of them got removed immediately after the warranty expired.

If not headers a quick check of the manifolds will tell.

Yes, all 3 years of the C3 LT-1 cars had Air Injection Reactor emission systems.
