It's really a function of engine clearances and lowest starting temperature. Unless you're doing cold starts in northern Alberta, an SAE 10w40 would be my choice. This will accomodate older or engines with larger clearances.
In my daily driver (Impala) in winter I use Mobil 1 0W-30. That is not a typo: 0W-30. It flows at -40F.
In the summer I use Mobil 1 10W-30 in both the Impala and the Corvette. Sometimes I'm tempted to go to 10W-40 but I don't think it is necessary. We did not have one day over 30C (86F) last summer.
5-W30 should be fine for Pennsylvania year round for an engine in good condition. Same for southern Canada. I think that's in agreement with the later C3 instruction manuals.
