Default 79 Diff fluid

Ok I would like to replace the diff fluid in my 1979. How much of a pain is this? So far I have the half shafts out and the spare tire carrier. Look to me like the spring has come come out. I would also like to drop the fuel tank while I have the space open. Is this also a pain?

I simply removed the spare tire carrier and siphoned as much as the old, nasty stuff as I could with a hand pump through the side fill plug. Capacity is something crazy like “1/2 inch below overflowing”. I just filled mine to overflowing and it’s been fine for three years. Don’t forget the posi additive.

The start of this project was to replace the gasket on the diff. Its actually leaking a little bit. As for dropping the tank I would like to do it just to clean it out and put a new sending unit in it. The sending unit is working but I have most of the stuff out of the rear of the car right now so why not do it while is available I guess is what I am thinking.

It actually wasn't that bad. I just removed the two bolts from the crossmember and all the diff cover bolts and it all came off just fine. OHHH and I put a jack stand under the diff so it wouldn't lay on my exhaust. Cover is off and the gears look great. Not bad for 25 years old. I was very low on fluid though. Now to get is all back on there
