Default Tremec install runout problems

we are in the middle of a switch form an autotrans to the Tremec 5 speed. All is going pretty well but we are having problems getting the runout set correctly. The orignal attempts were flawed because we didn't realize that the housing was punched out and had a depression in it - so we need to use the gauge on the very edge. We are close but it is really difficult - and now the pins are getting buggered up and we may need to get a new set of pins.

Anyone with any hints?

Sorry if the description is vauge - my brother is passing info to me over the phone - and I'm trying to guess what is going on!

Lakewood scattershield, I assume?

I had a bitch of time getting mine right, but I found that it helped to take a long file and clean up the both mounting faces and the register bore of the scattershield. The paint causes a lot of runout, as do the nick/chips/burrs. After that, I found the offset and bought the proper dowels. Make SURE the dowels turn easily in the block or you be cussing later. If necessary, hone them down to a close-tolerance slip fit. Take it slow and don't lose your temper. It will work.

Thanks for the input
we cleaned up the mounting faces with sandpaper - at least got the paint off so we could see what we were dealing with.

The tip about honing down the dowels may prove to be important!
