Are there any certain precatutions needed to be taken? I get real cautious when messing with coils. I think its time for me to replace my coil and condensor, will any auto parts replacement do or is there a certain type I need?

Just curious, but are you having issues with your coil? Coils tend to work or not work. Sometimes when they are quite hot there may be some internal breakdown resulting in poor spark. Oth, I have seen cars go their entire life with original coils.

Gary,
For months I've been having starter problems. Turned out my engine wasent grounded to the frame. When we found that it started up good for a day or so. Now it just turns over but wont start. After a few tries the starter sounds really bad like its rurrr rurrrrr rurrr then sometimes wont turn at all and just leaves a mechanical squeal sound. But the entire time its turning over just wont start. I suspected points or coil.
What's your gap on your points?
I would check it immediately. Also look at the condition of your points. Are they clean? Do they look corroded?
If that's too much of a hassle, check the dwell with a dwell meter...if memory serves, should be somewhere around 32...but I might be wrong, consult your owners manual to make sure.
When I was first getting my car going, I had the same problem, and points was the issue. It only takes a couple of seconds to pop the cap off and inspect them.

a coil / points failure would cause the engine not to fire. slow cranking (rurrr rurrr etc.) i normally associate with a low charge on the battery.
or am i missing something?
