Default Headers? Which set and why?

Getting ready to replace the beat up set of headers that are on my 69. Looked around at whats around. I'm leaning towards the Hooker Comp, or supper comps. Pros? Cons? Pit falls?

69 350/350 4speed 3.73. Holley Dble Pump, LT1 intake, Cam ???

Looking for the best bang for the buck.

Thanks for your input!!

I like hookers too. Be sure that you get the 1 3/4 inch primarys. Even a stock 350 will gain more on top end than it will lose in low RPM torque.

Just got a set of Hooker Super Comps coated with Jet-Hot installed. Very very nice. Custom exhaust shop I went through said they were the best/most complete set they have ever installed. Like C3 Stroker said, guaranteed for life. $599 including shipping for a big block.

Doug Thorley HEaders (now Headers by Doug)! Thickest wall tube and flanges that never warp and the tubes are so thick, when I replaced the rams horns, the car was actually QUIETIER!

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Dynomax coated headers yet. Best bang for the buck!

But I'm strange...I had my manifolds coated instead. Bling!

Easy, get the Dynomax.
The Dynomax Corvette SB Cerama-Coat fit & flow great, much better than is commonly known. Have been rec. them & many have them now.
Both the Hooker Super Comp & Dynomax Corvette are very good.

To me it's extremely annoying that I can't buy correct headers for my ZZ4. The ZZ4 has D shaped exhaust ports, and it doesn't appear that any of these manufacturers will sell their headers with D ports. It seems like it would be a trivial matter for a header manufacturer to offer D ports. I'd like to buy Hooker sidepipe headers for my ZZ4 with D ports. Also, I would be happy buying the Hedman Hedders that are made for the factory sidepipes. (I'd be happy to go with either factory sidepipes or Hooker Headers sidepipes.)

I've asked Hedmann twice now and both times the answer was no. I'm pretty sure that Hooker would say no.

Any suggestions as to a vendor that would replicate Hooker Headers or Hedmann Hedders with a D shapped exhaust port?

I know that I can buy shorty headers with D ports for a ZZ4. I'd like to buy the equivalent of Hookers or Hedmans for D ports.

Thanks

I think someone posted a while back that "they" (Hot Rod, Car Craft, or someone on those lines) tested D-shaped header versus round headers and there was no difference in performance.

My TFS heads have D-shaped ports and I'm running standard round headers.

Well, it's a relief to know that D port heads and standard round headers are compatible. So, I suppose I'll just have to accept that unless I want to go the high price option of finding someone to make a custom header, I can use a standard round port header.

However, several header manufactureres do offer D shaped shorty headers. If they have to tooling to make D shapped flanges for the shorties, it would really seem that they could make their standard line of headers available with an option for D ports. Giving customers the option of ordering their Hooker headers or Hedman hedders with D shapped exhaust ports seems like a very minor thing. Just as a matter of propriety, I'd like to have the exhaust ports of my heads (D ports), match the exhaust headers.

Another micro fact. The Hedman Hedders catalog for the factory sidepipes indicates that the headers are only for straight plug heads. The ZZ4 has angle plug heads. The Hedman Hedder for factory sidepipes fits with angle plugs. Also, the ZZ4 has exhaust ports about 0.1 inch higher than stock. The standard Hedman Hedder for the factory sidepipes fits with body frame clearances, notwithstanding that the ZZ4 has slightly elevated exhaust ports.

www.headersbyed.com

This is a local guy, based out of Minneapolis, MN. Many of the hardcore racers around here swear by this guy. He can make a custom set of headers to match what you have. When you order headers, he'll want cam specs, valve sizes, head flow rates...etc. etc. and then he'll build you a set of headers that will optimize performance. They might be a tad more expensive then hooker super comps ceramics, but they will fit your application.
just my $.02

good luck

trw
I haven't actually ordered headers from this guy, but my engine is coming out of the shop on Tuesday. I'll think about after that little ordeal is over.
