Default Alternater question

My 43 amp alt. is working fine but I am thinking on adding some cooling fans and will probably need higher amps. What makes an alt. higher amps and can you convert a 43 amp to a higher amp or is it just better to buy a new one with higher amps. Not going to do this right away and I'm always up for a challenge.

i believe its the internal windings...and i don't think you can change this in your garage....i'm sure an electrical shop can, but it may not be cost effective when new ones cost $80 - 100

There are kits available to boost the alternator's output (I used one from JC Whitney on a '68 Impala) but I think you will be better off just buying a high output rebuilt.

www.alternatorparts.com

Part # HO-7001 80 Amp Upgrade $29.95
Part # HO-7011 105 Amp Upgrade $39.95

http://www.alternatorparts.com/gm_al...grade_kits.htm

I have the 80 Amp kit with dual Spals and it works great. Took me about 45 minutes to do the upgrade and that includes removal and re-install. So, at least my alternator is "numbers matching" (it is about the only thing that still is ).

Thanks for the info. This is what I am looking for. My alternator is also numbers matching and about the only thing left that is. Not that I care anymore just looking for more juice from it.

My altenator went a couple of years ago. At that time I figured I would just go to an auto parts store and get a new one. Then I remembered a shop around here that rebuilds them. I took it to him. I think it was around 60 dollars. While I was there he up the amps and told me I was lucky that I did not get a new alternator and turn this one in as a core. He said that the corvette has its very own altenator. This altenator is not on any other car because it has cooling fins on the back. I was glad I kept the original and had it fixed.
