Default 454 corvette engine

I am going to look at a 454 today that the seller says is from a 73 covette.

He says that it has a forged crank and a factory windage tray assembly, factory aluminum intake, baffled oil pan and still has the factory exhust manifolds.

He mistakenly referred to it as an LS-6, pointing to the windage tray as proof. The price is right - even if it nothing special - but does anyone have any opinion on the clues that he gave me?

I will be going by later today to get casting #s, but I am just looking for any insight...

Joe

Is this the one in Austin in the paper? Looks like a good price. He probably meant it is an LS-6 clone engine. Be interested to find out what heads are on it. Good price regardless.

1973 & 1974 Corvettes only came with the LS-4 454, This engine had oval port iron heads, iron intake, Quadrajet carb, hydraulic lifter cam, and low compression, 2 bolt main, windage tray and baffles.

Earlier Corvette 454's were LS-5's or LS-6's. LS-6 was only available in '71 in Corvettes as a 425 hp version with aluminum heads. The LS-6 engine had rectangular port aluminum heads, aluminum intake, Holley carb, solid lifter cam, and high compression. You are getting BS'd somewhere. If it is a factory LS-6 then it did not originally come out of a '73 Corvette. If it came out of a '73 Corvette then it is not a factory LS-6

The engine block date code on a 1970-1974 BBC is typically on the bellhousing flange behind the distributor. On early big blocks, it was on the passenger side near the pan rail. Usually the date is given as a letter, a number and then a number, such as B 23 3 which is for February 23, 1963.
