Default Need help for transmission ideas!

My dad told me some of the best news I've had in a while ...

"Kosta, find out what transmissions are good for the corvette, the mechanic said it's not worth it to us to rebuild the old one"

So here is what we have:

1968 454 BB corvette, bored to about 462. What the engine had before the rebuild:

Edlebrock Performer RPM intake, heads and cams.
Comp Cams roller rockers
10:1 Compression
Headers

And a few other things. I believe our mechanic was switching the cam, but not positive.. he told us when he is done, it should be in the 500 HP range, and what I wanted to know was what would be a good sturdy Transmission for this. The old one was a Muncie 4 speed transmission. Would it be possible to put in a 5 speed that will work well / better?

Please let me know what possibilities we can do.

Thank you,

Kosta

a five speed or even a six speed would be nice. I've wanted a six speed for quite some time now. just waiting for school to stop taking all my money

We have just finished installing a Tremec T56 6 speed in my 70 s/b.

Easier with the body off! Hav a look at Wesch's thread on here and you will get an idea of the crossmember work you have to do.

I just recently put a 700r4 in mine wit a 2800 stall converter. It has a lower first gear than the turbo 400 and I still am basicly getting 2 more gears out of it than the original.

Sounds like you need a TKO600.

If you want to go with MT, go with the TKO. If you want to go with AT, the TH200R4 is a great choice (but make sure that you get a "built" one.. The gear ratios on the TH200R4 are probably the best on any AT and they eat up less HP than TH700R4's and TH400's. They are also lighter and bolt right to the stock crossmember. It's a bolt on swap... My 200R4 is rated 800 HP. It's built by Art Carr's business (California Performance Transmission)
