Haven't been able to find a website, however there is a guy on the NCRS forum site that can tell you what a part is and a whole lot of other informaiton just from a part number. The part numbers can be any GM part (Chevy, Ponitac, etc.)
Is there a web site that will give a discription of parts according to the GM part number, even if the part is discontinued.
Because I bought so many Vette parts from GM, they gave me a set of books so I could look up my own numbers. I spent a lot of time at the "local" Chevy parts counter(s).
From what I can tell, there is no source of discontinued parts lists available to the general public. You can give an old number to a GM parts counter guy and if he is in a good mood he can see the history of the part and if there is a new number, but even this sometimes is not accurate. GM used substitute parts in many cases that were functional replacements. Some of these had no resemblance to the original part, and some did not work at all.
I used to provide parts through my commercial account to a lot of NCRS type guys in NJ when I lived there.... I spent a lot of time messing with this stuff.
The GM Parts On Line site has a lot of "holes" in it. I punched in numbers I knew were good, and it came back NFG. The best approach I have found is to frequent the parts counter at your local Chevy dealer so they get to know you. The "phone" approach isn't quite as productive.
There are a few PDF files of microfiche that list and show all
the parts, but I'm not sure they have the "part numbers"
that are cast into the pieces. Someone posted a link a while
back, but I forget the details.
OK - found them on a CD I have. Unfortunately, the microfiche is
not text searchable. Looks like lots of scanned pictures.
But, if you have any idea what/where the part is - then it has the
part numbers for identification of model/year application.

Good Luck.
Tom....I know what "NFG" ment in the service...what does it mean on the GM counter?...Same thing?
Joe Lucia is the undisputed expert on GM part numbers. I have used him as a resource for years while restoring my 68 coupe. The man is a walking dictionary and his track record for accuracy is phenominal. Try Joe, I'm sure he can and will help you. Go to the Technical Discussion board at www.ncrs.org and post your question to him. You do not have to be a member of NCRS.

Thanks for the info about partsvoice web site. This is excellent and another reason why I love this forum; I learn something new everytime.
Thank you very much,
Kurt

Yup.
Edit.. I like to tell this story occasionally...
Was at a meeting... made a presentation.... included the term NFG.... young aspiring CEO girl requested I clarify the term NFG... thinking there would be one less adversary between her & the top.... she aleady knew what NFG meant.... thought she had me.... I thought quick.... responded "Not Found to be Good...... she smiled & sat down... end of discussion.... I win.
I punched in 3940916 and 3940922 at the above site(s?) and got no response on them. They are both original GM part numbers, discontinued, and the number has never been superceded.
