Default Bolt on muffler

Has anybody ever used a bolt on replacement muffler? If so, is it a difficult procedure. Also, if the old muffler is welded, how do I get it off. I don't think I can take it to a shop since the car isn't exactly emissions legal. Can I simply cut the old one off with a hacksaw and still bolt on the new one. Any advice appreciated.

As long as you are just replacing mufflers, it should not an issue with a muffler shop. You can use a sawsall or a hacksaw but it's hard to get a good straight cut since you are usually laying on your back.

A muffler shop will change the muffler. It is the Cats they will not fool with if you have an illegal set up,like I had. ($2500. fine here in Calif.)

I am in the process of replacing my mufflers on my 73. That is a project for a couple of months from now.

In the meantime I had to cut off the exhaust tips so that I could install the correct 73 extensions. So the process of removing the welded on exhaust tips ( like a 74-77 would have) would be similar to cutting the input to the muffler.

I bought a 4.5 inch grinding tool, and then a 4.5 inch cutting wheel to go on it. I cut a piece of cardboard to fit between the tailpipes and the the fiberglass/gas tank to deflect all of the sparks from the cutting wheel. ( I hope to get some input from doing this ) This allowed me to cut the tailpipe extensions off. I then used exhaust pipe adapters that I bought at a parts store. These were approx. 4 inches long and had the inlet and outlet for two different sizes that allowed me to adapt the correct extension tips. I now have them held in place with U Clamps until I can get them welded on.

For the muffler, I plan to do the same thing. Cut the exhaust pipe at the inlet to the muffler with the grinding wheel, find the correct pipe adapters to fit, clamp it in place, then drive to a muffler shop to have the pipes welded on.

This is the before photo of what I cut off

this is the after photo of the installation with the exhaust adapters.

From your question, the muffler may be able to be cut off, then clamped in place. It can then be taken in to be welded and the clamp removed if needed.
