Default need some side pipe exhaust help

I am going to be putting new exhaust on my 80. I don't know which setup i want though. I like the look of the factory side pipes but I don't like how restrictive they are. The hooker pipes look go too but I am not sure they are what I want. Has anyone used the factory covers and then had an exhaust built that uses more free flowing mufflers? Also what kind of ground clearance to you loose with the side pipes? And lastley are they loud to where you can't hear yourself think, or be able to listen to the radio? I have an exhaust on the car now but it was custom built about 4 years ago and after improving the suspension and replacing some parts it doesn't sit under the car right, that and the exhaust tips were always at 2 different angles. now i am looking for something different. I don't want to loose power as it is not that stout.
So I may have to do something custom. The reason i like the factory side covers is i can paint them to match the car. Any help would be great. thanks.

I am looking for some pictures if some one could post some, maybe if some one has the covers on with out the exhaust in them so i can get an idea of clearance.

these are all I have, not sure if it helps

I used the stainless sidepipes and had them Jet Hot coated black. They are not too loud for me. I have sound and heat barrier in the car and can hear conversations and stereo fine with windows up. No ground clearance losses compared to other low points under car.

Loud side pipes will be louder than loud rear exit, it dumps right by your ear. Of corse thats why I like em.

Factory covers restrict you to a 3" dia muffler. You're only choice is spiral mufflers, either from Spiral turbo Specialities or DIY from Speedway etc.

If you are cheap and use fiberglass repo covers you get another 1/2" in diameter which does help...

Ground clearance is reduced thats for sure, but still tolerable.

I think Patriot makes some tha would meet your needs. I looked long and hard and ended up with the hooker stainless... I haven't put them on yet, but I got some covers from Cobraparts.

i like the look of the pipes coming under the rocker...

Good Luck

How bad do the pipes get beat up behind the front tire? if i go with hooker I will either do the flat black or maybe step up to the ceramic coated. Not sure yet though.
