I bought my 76 last fall and have been trying to get things road ready for spring, It sat for 10 years in a pole barn. Of course the brakes were bad, and all the power steering fluid has leaked out from somewhere. So I try to put some more fluid in so I can tell where it is leaking but I can't get the power steering fluid cap off. when you unscrew it, it hits the alternator mounting bracket. Is this normal ??? It doesn't seem like thats the way it should have come from the factory. I know buba did some work on the car before me but what do you guys think.
Thanks for your help...
It's pretty tight in that area. I would suggest you make certain you have the correct belts installed as too long or too short may cause clearance issues.
As far as leaks: common places to look are the control valve, hoses at the valve, connections at the pump, pump shaft seal, pump housing seal ring. Clean and de-grease everything and dust the areas mentioned with flour. The leak(s) will show up very quickly.
I have to use two hands getting my cap out.Once it's loose,I gently tilt it to the the front of the engine(by feel) and it comes out of the filler neck.

i had this same problem and you could not get mine out because of the same problem....i made a dipstick out of 16 gauge 3/8 steel and it is bent so that it rest on the neck of the PS pump....i used a friends dipstick to make the markings on mine...to use it you just loosen the cap and push it off to the side and slip this in....it looks like this ignore the dots

I had the same problem on my 76. The neck was too long. It was that way when I bought the car. So I ordered another one and you can clearly see the differance between the two. Problem gone.

16 gauge is 1/16th inch, not 3/8". Or did you mean the "flange" bend was 3/8Th's inch ?

perhaps i could have described it better, i meant it was 16 ga thick and 3/8 wide, since i got the dip stick out when i replaced the engine i cut the end off and replaced the belt which was too short and i now can remove the dip stick...

Good idea.I was sure you did not mean 3/8 steel. That solves a problem and risk of breaking the original.
