I've been going back and forth on my motor rebuild for the past couple of weeks. I had originally planned on taking a spare '81 350 complete motor and getting it machined and built up from scratch with Vortec heads, etc. But, when I start looking at some of the GM Goodwrench crate motors I'm wondering if it's cheaper to start with one of them and build up form there.
Also, I was poking around on Scoggin-Dikey's web site and found a motor that is a notch below the 290/350 HO motor they have for $1650. It's a 249/350 motor that looks identical to the 290/350 with the exception of a mild cam but it's price is $300 less at about $1350. I was going to replace the cam anyway with a full Vortec upgrade. At that price I could easily justify going the crate motor route instead of rebuilding the spare motor I have now.
I got an ATK rebuilt crate long block, everything from the oilpan to intake for about $1300. ~240 hp/350ci, mild cam, 9.1 to 1 comp..Easy way to replace my old L48.
