How many pieces are there to a speedo cable?
Someone gave me a replacement for a '79 but it is not nearly long enough to go from speedo to transmission. I don't see any "joints" between the 2 points.
Am I missing something?
Also how can you tell if your cable or actual speedo is the culprit?
There were two versions. One is for a car with cruise control, one for a car without. Sound like you got the lower piece for the cruise unit model. You need the non cruise cable.
if you have cruise control, the cable leaves the speedometer and goes to the cruise control box in front of the firewall near the master brake cylinder, another cable leaves that box and goes to the tranny.if the cruise control box mechanism is messed up your speedometer needle will jump up and down at low speeds, it will also cause the tranny to leak where the cable enters the side of the tranny. i learned this from my own experieces with my 79 vette. the trany was leaking so i took it in to a shop, they fixed the leak but said it will start again because the cable was for all practical purposes "locked up" because the cruise control mechanisms inside the box was worn out and not turning.
