Got a set of electric fans and shroud from a 2000 SS Camaro with a 350. Fits perfect with very little trimming and fabrication. I have a question that 2 friends are giving different answers to. Should I use a thermal switched thermostat mounted on the radiator tank to operate them or should I use a thermostat reading the water temp somewhere on the motor? One says (the one saying I should mount it on the motor somewhere reading water temp) I should use a thermostat on the motor with a higher setting than the 190 degree mechanical one in my water outlet. The other guy (the one that says I should use a thermal switched one on the radiator) says I should use a lower temp one than the mechanical one. Need help! What has worked best for you all? Thanks
I would run one in the radiator, but it should switch a relay coil, not direct power to the fans. I believe the fans draw too much current for a thermal switch to handle without a relay. Reason I think the radiator would be best is you will still have the thermostat in the water neck to control engine temperature.
If your block doesn't have one, any other 350 of the 70's , 80's ilk will. Look in your engine compartment on the drivers side between port one and two of your exhaust manifold or header pack. You will find screwed into the block a brass fitting , probably with a single wire attatched via a clip to the end point of it. This wire goes to your temp gauge. This is a brass thermistat screwed directly into your water jacket at one of the hottest points in the block..........Use that! You can buy duel connectors for this purpose, check the Zone.
