When I got the car the low fuel light did not work, later I found out it didn't work because somene removed the bulb and did not replace it. So I replaced the bulb and now it's always on (now I know why the bulb was removed, that damn light is bright and annoying). So now the big question... what are the possible problems? I'm not sure how this light is activated, does it go off the fuel gauge? or from the sending unit at the gas tank? I do have a slight problem with my fuel gague... it's not accurate when the tank gets below half full. With a 1/2 tank or more the guage works perfect but below that the needle starts jumping all over the place and I have to guess when I'm getting low. Could that mess with the low fuel light? Even when the tank is full and the guage reads full?
If I cant figure it out then I will take the easy way out and remove the bulb again.

It's probably a combination of problems but start with your fuel gauge and its sending unit in the tank. You can remove the sending unit, clean it up and and re-establish the contacts. There is an armature that sweeps against a coil that sends the signal to the gauge. Over the years, buildup on the armature tip inhibits the connection...or it bends away and makes not contact as it completes it sweep or near the empty range of the fuel gauge. So the fix is to remove it, clean it with brake fluid and solvents, re-establish connection and test it with amp meter...it's a nice one-day project just add six pack. Oh, before connecting the connectors to the outside of the tank, clean those contacts as well and by all means...unhook battery before attempting any of this. Mixing spark and fuel is not a good thing.
Once you've completed that...than see if low fuel light does same thing. If it does, than the problem is probably the circuit board on the back side of the console. It may have a short so its best to check the circuit with an amp meter. These circuit boards are flexible so a solder line may have cracked. Usually Radio Shack geeks can help diagnose and repair such things for a few bucks. I had some speaker board circuits reparied for $25.00...beats the price of replacement.
On my 79 there is a separate, small circuit board that operates the bulb for low fuel light. As I recall that board just twists in like a regular bulb so perhaps you are missing the low fuel circuit board??? I doubt that would cause your other gauge problems though. Good luck.
