Default More side pipe questions

The more and more i look into this the more disappointed i get. I love the look of side exhaust but the cost to make it flow right is crazy. I am refering to the Hooker sidepipe set up here. The factory side exhaust is to restrictive to start. What i am thinking of now is to use the factory side covers and then build and under car system that emptys the the factory side cover openings. Has any one done this or something similar. I checked under the car and it looks as if there might be room for the mufflers under the seats. I don't know how much heat would radiate through the floor though. I have been looking into different baffles for the side exhaust and the spiral turbos would be the best but the cost is mor than i am willing to spend, chambered inserts are still restrictive even at the largest avail 2-1/2in. I need to get new exhaust on the car , and side exhaust would be cool. Its just becomming to expensive to mke it work. I can get a true dual out the back set up for $225 with the H pipe , if I supply the mufflers. I'm kinda venting here, but would like to know of some custom side exhaust you guys might have done, or have pictures of. Thanks again.

Why take it in steps? Get Hookers with the max-flow (or whatever) insert, then upgrade to JCL spirals later.

A number of companies make bigger tube factory style sidepipes.
Stock was 1-3/4", I have seen 2" and 2.5" versions.

You can always make your own, I basically took a pair of stainlessworks mid year 3" pipes, added 69 style end pieces and had two connectors made to mate to the hedman headers.

They fit nicely under the factory covers and sound pretty amazing.

Check with JCL, I think he said you could fit a 3in pipe under the factory covers. Maybe he has a sprial that'll work too.

instead of the JCL's people have used the Auger Style mufflers, they are only 11 inches long but you can buy two and weld them together...a HECK of a lot cheaper than JCL's...let me see if i can find the link.

here's the link to speedway motors, i kno summit sells these as well at a cheaper price just not sure where to look on summit...

I have the 3.5" augers under fiberglass repo covers. They flow very well, I had to retune the carb and I picked up about 2" of vacuum.

They support tube is a lot smaller than the JCL's too.

I used 3 per side, and they are actually quieter than the stock side pipe muffelers I replaced.

I have hedman side exhaust headers, 2.5" Allens mufflers in which i cut open and gutted, had 2.5" tubes bent from the collector and welded to the mufflers. I left the baffle screen, but all the packing has been destroyed. All this under the factory side exhaust covers..Its loud as hell..(probably too loud)..but definitely

I have Sanderson block hugger ceramic coated headers and Patriot side pipes, but you could go with a larger size block hugger and have plenty of room to run 2.5 or 3" exaust.

There is a company that makes 3" chambered mufflers. I don't have the link handy but you can probably find it with a web search.

Thanks for the replies. I have a new idea but I don't know that it will work. I am thinking the hooker style side pipes and for the inserts I am thinking of using the moroso spiral flow mufflers. the outside case diameter is 4in which is supposed to be the inside diameter of the side pipe. I know that in my not fit and that I may have to massage the muffler to fit the tube. I think then I can have a transfer made so that it seals like the slip in inserts do. The mufflers are 12in long and i can get 2-1/2in 3in or 3-1/2in size inlets and outlets. Interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks again.

My car came with headers, a long "S" pipe that entered the front of the factory resonators covered by the factory fiberglass covers.
It was making me deaf, and the headers were rusted and leaking.
I changed over to the stock rams horm manifolds. I had a downpipe with a right angle bent in it. From there it goes back and sideways, at about 45 degrees, to a 12" long glasspacks then into the factory resonators. I would imagine you could do the same with shorty headers and use whatever kind of sidepipe you wanted.

Another option for the mufflers are the 3" ID chambered incerts from Classic Chambered Exhaust Inc. I have them on my 65 but don't have any flow data. On my 71 I have home made 2.5" ID glass packs made with smooth perforated tubes. In dyno tests on a dynojet engine dyno with and without the muffler incerts. My motor made 630 HP and 652 ft lbs without muflers and 632 HP and 635 ft lbs with my home made glass pack incerts. Peak horsepower was esentially the same with or without the incerts while peak torque was down 20 ft lbs with the incerts (just the opposite of what I expected). I have about $50 in materials for the incerts.
