As the title implies I'm curious as to how I can go about removing the heating/cooling assembly as it is no longer hooked up and takes up space and adds weight.
The box is 2 pieces that sandwich the firewall. You have to remove the lines, then there are screws going through the interior side to the eng side. You'll end up with a big sq hole in the firewall. You're going to have to remove the dash and gauge cluster.

From reading earlier posts on heater box replacement, it may make a difference if your car originally had air conditioning.
For air conditioned cars you have to take out the heater unit from the interior, removing the right side dash area. For non a/c cars you can do that from the engine bay.
Now you said you just want to remove the engine area heater cover. So I think that means you want to take out the heater core unit, and the engine bay cover completely, then replace the cover with a flat piece to make the firewall area cleaner. To do that you still have to remove the heater core.
