Default Tire Pressure Advice

I am running 255/60R15, and need advice on what tire pressures those that have these use. I called the tire store where I purchased them and the technician (in name only), told me to put xx psi in run them for 1000 miles and check tread wear????? It would take me 6 months to put 1000 miles on my car. The tires are brand new, and I'd like to have the correct pressure in them now

The door tag says 20 psi, but that is for the original tire size. These are a plus size.

Thanks for any help,

Mark

I'm running 245/60R/15, down one size from you. I look at how the tire sits on a flat surface to get in the ballpark and then adjust the pressure based on the wear pattern. For my car and tire brand/size, 32 lbs works perfect.

Mark,

Those low tire pressures on your door were developed for ride quality back in the 60's and 70's. Todays tires are constructed in an entirely different manner and manufactured to have a flat footprint and comfortable ride at much higher pressures. You should be able to run between 30 and 32 psi without a wear problem. The higher pressure tires were developed to reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel mileage. My wife's PT Cruiser (hangs head in shame) utilizes 34 psi in all four tires.

I was told by a tire supplier that the general rule of thumb for all passenger car radials is 32psi.

I run 32 psi,and have been doing so for years for both P255-60-15's and P245-60-15's.
