I have always used white lith (spray can) with good results. If you pull the cable out of the housing use brake clean on the cable. If there is much rust should just spend the $20.00 and replace.
i replaced all my cables. every one. when i bought the speedo it came as a 2 piece and i bought a tube of cable lube from corvette central when i purchased the 2 cable halves.. lubed the heck outta it and installed it,,also did the tach and the gas pedal cable..
my speedo cable squeaks to,but how do you get to it to lubricate it with the white grease? thanks
On mine, a 76, I had to unhook the clip under dash where it plugs into the speedometer. I also unhooked from the transmission as well. The cable has to pulled out from the speedometer end.

I think you can simply pull the actual insides out of the sheathing, then put a little white lith grease in the palm of your hand and pull the cable through it to grease it up. Then slide it back into the cable housing and re-attach at both ends.
