The 76 is an electronic tach while the 73 is a mechanical cable driven version.

The issue w/the 76 may be the tach board itself, but could also be the tach filter. This device is there to prevent electrical spikes from damaging the tach circuit board. It is located inline w/the wire coming from the distributor and going to the tach. On my 75 it is bolted to one of the rear bolts on the top drivers side of the intake manifold. It's a tubular can and can be tested by simply removing both the input and output wires and connecting them together. If this helps I'd suggest you don't leave it this way as it could end up damaging your tach. However I'm sure you will get responses from others saying they haven't had one for years w/no issues.

If it turns out that you need a tach filter, PM me and I can give you more info on replacement options.

Now as far as the 73, I don't have any first hand knowledge but of course I'd first check the cable and then I have read where there is a right angle adapter, at the distributor I believe, that often strips it gears. I'm sure someone w/first hand knowledge will jump in here soon and clairfy and/or add to this.

Welcome and good luck to you both.

Thanks for the reply on the 73. mine doesn"t have a right angle at the dist. it has the msd eletronic dist. that was there when i bought it. The tach goes right into the base of the dist, maybe the guy that put it in did it wrong. lot of other things he just put together with chewing gum. I don't mind it though, i love working on it and got the price that i wanted, so i can't complain.
