Would like to remove my emissions eq from my 81. Its registered in FL, so no emissions reqs needed. I've been told removal will add some H.P. Any truth to this? If so, can anyone recommend where/how to start and what to remove? Thanks
that may be, but it's still illegal to remove or bypass the factory emission crap... whether your locale tests or not.
you wouldn't be able to later sell the car to someone in a location that does testing.
It's a risk that you have to ask yourself... are you willing to take? If you are a risk taker, then strip off all of those Gore-Gizmos and enjoy your car
I started by removing the catalytic converter and installing a test pipe bought off ebay. You could definitely feel the difference. Then I removed the air pump and associated hoses. This cleans the engine compartment up a bit. I think the rest of it will be going next winter.
I've removed all the smog stuff from mine. The thing to keep in mind is that the ECM controls your timing. You are taking away pieces that it uses as sensors to help regulate things.
I've changed my distributer to a vacuum advance type and it made a large difference. Added headers and a carb that doesn't have the ECM hookup.
In each case my seat of the pants dyno noticed some improvements, some small some large. Overall substantial.
