It's not fuel. Fuel wouldn't be there the next day.
Leaking valve covers wouldn't affect the engine running and wouldn't be on the hood.
Here's my guess derived from your clues:
You said "... and I recently sprayed the engine bay down." I'm guessing that the engine got water on it and in the electronics somewhere causing it to miss. The symptoms are exactly like "wet engine". After running it and driving for a few hours, it finally dried out regardless of the other things you did.
My guess is that the leak is one of three things: either the power steering is leaking and hitting the belts throwing it up on the hood, or there is a leak in the cooling system and the fluid is radiator fluid, or there is a leak in the engine somewhere up front (timing cover?) and oil is being thrown around.
I think the leak and the engine miss are separate events...
Taste it, could be coolant, I had a similar problem years ago, turned ou to be a pinsized hole in the coolant tube from the heater that was aimed right at the distributor
I'll take a wild guess based on your description. You do not have the metal alternator belt guard in place, the belt is loose, and it has chewed into the bottom of the upper rad hose.
so when you have engine running and hood open you don't see anything spritzing out? Try revving the engine a bit while observing.... hmmmmmm.... take some swabs and send it to the lab!
You left the bolt out of the front of the block...down near the fuel pump. It's the one that you use to "pin" the pump rod when you change fuel pumps. Is it loose? Chuck
If it's in the front, it's gotta be coming from the front. The fan "sucks" air....sucks things backwards towards the block. So, what do you have in front that could be leaking down/back?
Radiator and hoses, water pump, PS pump, AC compressor, AC dryer/cooler, gaskets from valve covers, gaskets on front of intake manifold, fuel pump area, ???? Chuck
