I've started a research project on my 69. Been try to figure out the mileage, so I'm contacting the DMV of the last state it was titled in and they will send me a title search form and then I will go backwards from that state and so on. I was also going through the info about the car when I found it on the net and the seller stated a 'frame off restoration' Other than the body mounts is there any way to tell if the body has ever been off the car. Maybe a dumb question but this is is the place dumb people get good answers.
The body mounts are usually the best indicator, but other items are sometimes a tale. Check the cleanliness on the top of the transmission. The top of the rear crossmember. The cleanliness on the top of the frame rails. Basically, cleanliness of areas that are not easily accessable from under the car.

Good luck with the DMV. I'm doing some research right now with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. I'm trying to get a copy of any of the documents they may have on microfiche such as dealer invoice, certificate of origin, shippers copy or original title. California will also send you info on owners history.
If anyone wants to request the info from California, here is the way to do it. Go to their website and click forms. Find form 70 under registration/vehicle information. You simply fill out the form on the computer. Print it off and send to the DMV with some $.
I figured the microfiche documents I need are all 1980 so I requested all documentation for that year for a flat $20. Owners history looks like it will be $5 extra. Hope this helps someone & I'm sure other states have similar services
