After much debate I'm going with vinyl tiled floor. Basic reason is if worse case scenerio a tile gets gouged by dropping a hammer from 6ft all I have to do is take a scraper pull up the one tile and smack down a new one. Fixed in less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Paint/ epoxy and any other "liquid" form would be ruined and would require repaint. Plus with paint/ epoxy there's the issue of removing all the contents of the garage, acid etching the entire garage and all that BS, where would I secure the tools etc. when that's going on? Peel and stick vinyl you can move 1 item at a time as you peel and stick the tile down, simple 1 day project.
Home Depot carries the tile both in paste and stick and traditional vinyl requiring the glue. Will the peel and stick hold? Could I buy the peel and stick and use a glue for areas where the concrete garage floor is oil soaked cause I don't think the peel and stick glue will hold in those areas.
I can't help, but I think it's a really good idea. To me the best thing is that the floor beneath it protected from flying hammers and even fluid spills. Not only would you have to repaint the floor, you'd have to fill in the chunk you took out of it too!
I called Armstrong before I did it. Here is what they told me:
- Thoroghly clean the floor (etching is not required)
- Use the peel 'n' stick tile (other adhesives have issues with auto fluids)
- Once complete, wax with a commercial floor wax
- Let set for 3 days (curing prevents hot tire marks)
- Done
I followed their instructions and now can clean the floor with a swifter mop and the cars no longer get dusty and it looks cool. I used the black and white checkered pattern but you can get them in almost any color combination. Home Depot has a catalog. By the way, 800 sf cost me around $150.00.
Interesting about the cars no longer get dusty...... my concrete garage floor does generate a lot of dust... Tiles for me!!
I have tile for 7 years. They work well unless you weld etc.I put down a sub floor of glue tiles and now I have the stick on type on top of that. They are easy to replace and cheap.love the look.
It's been almost 3 years with my tile floor. I used the glue and industrial tiles. Not 1 problem. Easy to keep clean, makes it nice crawing under the car and looks just darn great. I put a new front and rear suspention on last year and had no problems cleaning the greese, cleaning solvents and 30+ years of crud from the floor. I think they are a bit cheaper then the peal/stick ones. Easy to replace. Just heat the bad tile up, pop it out and replace. Best move I made in my garage buy far!!!!
I live in New England with melting snow and salt etc.
Does anyone have experience on how the tiles hold up in harsh environment? Garage is not heated except when I am working in it. Also, wife shares poprtion of garage and her car would be the one tracking in the snow, ice, salt, and sand , etc.
Thanks for any input. I Would like to go with the tiles.
These are meant for a garage and a garage environment.....no gluing, no slipping, no floor prep....best of all you can pick them up and take them with you should ever move.
great stuff!! but my garage (2 car, but barely big enuf for 3) is maybe 460 sq ft? just a guess - will have to measure. That would cost around $1100. How many ft did you cover?
