Just bought an aftermarket speedo/tach lens for a 79. Problem is that it has a couple of smudged fingerprints, one of which is quite noticeable--presumably from the black paint. Anything I can safely use to remove these? Lacquer thinner, perhaps? I know the easiest thing is to return it for an exchange, but that's such a hassle. Thanks in advance.
Try camera lens cleaner and the felt cloth used with it. Also I have some "Motor Cycle Plastic Lense cleaner" It is an extremly light abrasive with a filling silicone in the emulsion, it works great for this. Another great fix for something like this is denatured alchohol, try it on the old lens first and see if the lens material is affected. Usualy denatured alchohol is non invasive but will remove paint..strangely enough.
I would try the Meguair's cleaner/polish that's made for clear plastic. Did a great job for me, especially on my boat windshield. I don't think you want to try laquer thinner, it may soften the plastic and make things worse.

Thanks for the replies. Ended up using Meguiar's regular paint cleaner. First tried on the old lens to make sure it was not too abrasive. Worked just fine. Have also done the instrument cluster lens with the same results. It removed a lot of the small scratches/swirls from cleaning over the years.
