Well, I 'finished' my 700r4 swap into my 79 vette, and as far as I can tell I have everything hooked up right (TV cable, shifter linkage, etc). I'm using the original shifter and made my own bracket for the TV cable. What would cause the transmission to not shift past second gear? I can't figure it out and its driving me nuts!
Forgot to say that it does shift from first to second at about 3000 RPM under moderate throttle and around 1500 RPM under light throttle. Still, I took it all the way to 6000 RPM in second gear, and it just will not shift to third. I'm at a total loss as to what could be causing it.
Bumping this... It occurs to me that I might have not gotten the TV cable attatched properly at the tranny (the little hook might not be in the end of the cable). Would that cause the no shifting to third problem? Anyway, its raining now, so I'm going to have to wait to check it until it quits. Any ideas?
I've never had a 700R4, but I've read about how the TV cable adjustment is critical. Did you install some type of conversion kit that bypasses the lockup converter? Do a seach in Yahoo or Google for 700R4 conversions. Lots of hotrodders have installed & figured out this trans. Good luck.
The trans relys on that tv cable to be in perfect working order if its not hooked up theres a good chance that lots of things will not work properly. When adjusted properly your trans pressure at the test port should be 5 to 10 psi higher when the cable is hooked up compared to unhooked. You also need to make sure after make this adjustment that when you have the pedal to the floor that the plunger down in the transmission is getting pushed all the way in. If its not I would suggest get the tv made easy kit from Bow Tie Overdrives. it also has some adjustabilty for the type of shift feel and stuff like that.
