engine clausterphobia
i'm new to this site and want to thank everyone for all the great info. I'm a 20 year old marine reservist/college student who just got back from Iraq. I have a 78' and just put hooker sidepipes on it and took out the old snorkel intake and smog pump. i want that show car look where theres no unnecessary crap under my hood. i'm planning on pulling the old ac compressor and cruise control wires. can anyone lead me in what else i can do or pull to actually see my engine? thanks in advance.

A couple guys on here have smoothed out the fire wall.
Getting rid of the wiring/smog parts and a bunch of vacuum lines makes the engine compartment look a bunch better. As does going to a stand alone airfilter.
Another good one is a plug wire loom.

thanks for the quick reply. I'm not too mechanicaly inclined so do you know of a book or website that labels everything under the hood? I'd hate to pull something i needed. also is the heat resistant fabric on the inside of the hood really necessary? I'd love to see pics of what other members have done. thanks.

I can't believe no one answered this. Get a service manual from your year vette from HELM or on Ebay and get the Assembly manual from pretty much any vendor. This will give you everything you need.

Next owner may want those. Some of that stuff is getting difficult to find. If you take off the A/C compressor, do it right and take to evaporator off too. I hate to see a nice car with open evaporator lines under hood.

what if there was say a chrome or stainless downward open channel ran,maybe six inches high, across the top of the firewall,with an indentation to avoid the distributor,you could re-locate many wires,hoses,tubing,or such.it could be removed with a couple of screws along the top,and you would gain quick easy access to all systems.
if someone has already tried this(I don't think this idea is new)post a couple of pics so we can copy your work .

Whatever you remove, hang on to. As someone mentioned earlier, the stuff, no matter how junky it appears, if original, is worth $$ to someone at some point.

You can extend all of the wiring and vacuum lines to make them long enough to run down on the frame rails. If I were doing that I would just buy a new under hood harness and run it from all of the forward stuff to mate up with the orgnial harness along the frame rail. That way you only have to have 1 splice in each wire. Put lots of bling under the hood so that the lookers are blinded by the chrome and can not see past it to the frame rails.
