More specifically, besides the engine, are there any mechanical differences in a BB vette and a SS other than the engine? I've heard that the sway bar, shocks and even the drive shaft are more heavy duty. However, when I look in a parts catalogue (like Ecklers) I don't see options to buy a sway bar for a BB vs. one for a SB. Thanks for your advise.

Yes, there are or may be differences. Primarily in the suspension. Heavier front springs and a rear bar for one in the big block cars(and LT-1). Depending on the specific year and options, there may be other differences such as in the axle yokes. It's not always universal, though. For instance, a '72 base-engined car uses the same HD stub shafts with the cap retainer as the LT-1 and big block cars so you can't say that the big block cars always use the HD axles.
You can only discuss a specific year when it comes to what is or may be different. There are also suspension options that cloud the issue, such as the ZR-1, ZR-2, and FE7. Again, you have to be very specific.
Actuall I have several restoration books. I honestly didn't think of looking there. I haven't read them from to back yet (I know what's wrong with me that I haven't done that several time already), but I didn't remember seeing that kind of distinction in there. But I'm going to look tonight, and if its there I'll let you know. Sometimes a swift kick in the *** is a good thing.
